Lebanon Family History
We get asked this question very often: How can I find my long
lost relatives in Lebanon? How can I learn about my family history?
The best way
to discover your roots is actually by visiting Lebanon
and going
to the village,
town
or
city
that your
grandparents/parents are from.
You might get lucky and still find people who knew them when they lived there
and can share stories. Also, Lebanese family names have their own
heritage.
So if you ever vist the birthplace of your relatives, your family
name would direct you to distant relatives,... but the key here is
to
know where
your grandparents/parents are from, and where they lived. For example,
knowing that they're from Beirut is not enough, the specific
street or neighborhood
is needed for you to find the family history. It is much easier
if they were from a small village or town, that narrows down the
search.
If traveling to Lebanon is not possible,
you can start the process by
trying to locate the website for town/village your
grandparents/parents are from. The ShooFiMaFi.com
LINKS page has a list of websites for Lebanese towns
and villages. This is a good place to start, and if you don't find
the town/village you're looking for, Google
it, and that might
provide others. Once you locate that site, contact those who developed
it, and they will most likely be glad to assist.
Last but not least, there are several Lebanese
family websites online. We don't have a list of them, because
such a list would be impossible to maintain. Also, that's the least
reliable resource, because Lebanese families are usually
large,
meaning two members with the same last name are probably unrelated.
A family name alone, without the birthplace doesn't provide accurate
results. Keep us
posted,... we always enjoy hearing success stories. So if this
information was helpful, let us know. Also, if you find a website
for a town/village that's not listed in our LINKS page, share it
with
us, and we'll update our list to help others.
